AIDS STATISTICS – AUGUST 2000

  • 22,4% of all pregnant women who visited ante-natal clinics in South Africa during 1999 were HIV+.
  • 200 HIV+ babies are born every day in South Africa
  • 32,8% of KZN’s pregnant women were HIV+ during 1999
  • At the University of Durban-Westville , 25% of the students tested positive for HIV
  • At present 4,2 million( 10%) of South Africans are HIV+ ( the total population is 42 million). This is the highest infection rate in the world, outstripping even India with a population 20 times larger. Estimated to rise to 6 million in 2005
  • In KZN the death rate ( due to AIDS) is now higher than the birth rate
  • UNAIDS, however, estimate this rate to be between 20% and 25%. They estimate that only 5% HIV+ people worldwide are aware of their status
  • AIDS deaths are expected to rise from 250 000 by 2002 to more than 1 million by 2008.Last year alone, 2,8 million people died of AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa( The highest rate ever)
  • Most South Africans die 6 to 8 years after being infected with HIV
  • Its projected that the number of HIV infections will peak in 2010( at between 25 and 30% of the population) but the number of AIDS cases will continue to increase for another 5 to 10 years
  • In KZN there is currently approximately 120 000 AIDS orphans. This figure is expected to rise to 750 000 in 10 years from now
  • Almost 1 million orphans under 15 will die of AIDS by 2005 in SA
  • SA has more than 100 000 HIV+ children and it is reported that 1 out of every 7 children will be an HIV/AIDS orphan by 2005
  • 90% of the world’s 11 million orphans are in Africa
  • More than 8 million children have already been orphaned in sub-Saharan Africa and it is likely that the disease will produce 3 million orphans over the next 10 years
  • In the KZN Midlands, 75% of hospital beds are occupied by children with AIDS-related diseases, while 50% of childhood deaths in that area were AIDS-related
  • About 300 people with AIDS are being admitted daily to SA hospitals, filling 40% of general ward beds in some hospitals
  • By 2006 the number of AIDS deaths will equal the number of people dying of all other causes
  • According to Medecins Sans Frontieres(MSF) 60 000 HIV infected babies will be born in South Africa this year
  • HIV prevalence is highest among women aged 20 – 30
  • 550 000 new HIV infections per year in south Africa ( 1700 per day)
  • Approximately 40-60% of all TB patients are HIV+
  • 11 million STD episodes are treated annually in South Africa
  • Life-expectancy in Africa will have plunged to 30 by the end of the decade. Currently, in Botswana it has dropped from 71 to 39.
  • 75% of all people with HIV in the world, live in Sub-Saharan Africa. Currently 25 million Africans are infected with HIV
  • In Botswana 36% of all adults carry the HIV Virus
  • Without AIDS the population growth in Southern Africa would have been increasing with between 1% and 3%. By 2003, however, the population growth in SA, Zimbabwe and Botswana will drop to between 0,1% and 0,3%( a negative fertility rate)
  • Between 28% and 45% of mineworkers in SA are HIV+. This has already lead to a 15% drop in productivity at mines
  • Mines loose between 5% and 10% of their workers every year due to AIDS and will need to employ 20% more workers over the next 5 years to maintain normal production
  • When a worker develops full-blown AIDS, he/she will be absent 50% of the time and when at work, will function at 50% below capacity
  • The SANDF claims that 12% of its soldiers have AIDS.
  • 85% of Zimbabwe’s soldiers have AIDS
